Co-production and patient involvement
Living Library and Self-dialyses unit, promoting patients ability for self-care
Self-dialysis unit at Ryhov County Hospital is an epitome of patient empowerment. The unit has been created by and for the patients ‘’from scratches’’.
In 2015 a patient, Christian Farman spoke with Britt-Mari Banck, a nurse in the Ryhov County Hospital hemodialysis clinic in Jönköping, Sweden. Farman said to her, “You have to help me treat myself. I need to have control in my life.” Farman’s unusual request was met with an unusual response. Britt-Mari said ‘Yes, how shall we start?’”
Soon after that, Britt-Mari was training other renal patients to manage their own treatment. The self-dialyses unit was opened in 2006 and it were patients who have chosen the furniture and medical equipment and staff and patients on the unit have developed the service together, from learning how to use the new equipment to managing their care. Today, over 60 percent of the hospital’s peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis patients are managing their own treatments. No infections have occurred at the unit since it established.
Self-dialyses in Jönköping has revolutionized the view of care delivery. It has changed the process of care and has brought a different dimension to service in healthcare.
